Threw my hat in the ring for this year’s Penguin Cover Design contest, based on the exciting and compelling young reader book by Nazneen Ahmed Pathak.
I wanted to portray themes of resistance, the supernatural, and the haunting impact of colonialism. Indigo, symbolic of imperialist exploitation, was employed for the city and its metaphorical cage.
To capture the vibrancy of Southeast Asian culture depicted in the book, I used highly saturated colours throughout the illustration.
By the way, I highly recommend this book—it’s a captivating and thought-provoking read.
Full cover, including spine, back and front. Set against a pink background, there are swooshes of golden yellow flying out of an open book on the rear cover, snaking around to the front, where it weaves in and out of an indigo-hued birdcage. In the birdcage are tropical flowers like hibiscus, struggling to emerge from between the bars. There is also a city scape of Victorian London, the same colour as the cage. Within the yellow swoosh in the title, The City of Stolen Magic, in a fiery orange.
